Please Read Carefully.
Although we follow a standard protocol, every Science teacher has his or own set of rules for writing lab. notebooks and every year a new section is added.

Protocol for Use of the Ninth grade

Lab Notebook

Always write on the odd numbered pages. (1,3,5 etc...)

Top of page must have: title of Exercise and date (on right side)

The order of Pre Lab sections is as follows:

     1. Objective or Purpose (choose 1): write the purpose behind the activity

ex: "To learn how to analyze food for organic compunds"

     2. Introduction or Background: this is a one or two paragraphs about the topics that will be explored in the lab.  This should include any "new" terms and a one sentence summary of what will be done.

     3. Materials: write the list of materials I have written on the board.  If a handout is given to you, you may just write:"as listed in ----- Handout" ( since you will be able to use the handout in the lab)

     4. Procedure:  write a summarized ( but easy to follow) version of the procedures given to you.

Write results and conclusions in notebook on the same day(s) the experiment is conducted.

Make entries in chronological order; pages should be dated.

Discuss or interpret the data immediately after compiling and organizing the data.
If two members of the lab collaborate on an experiment, both lab members should write up the experiment in their own notebooks. Data pasted in may be the same, but introductions, discussion, etc. must be different.

FAILURE TO BRING THE LAB NOTEBOOK PROPERLY PREPARED FOR THE DAY’S LAB ACTIVITY WILL RESULT IN: ( absolutely no excuses)

 1. 10 POINT REDUCTION from that day's evaluation

2. missing the activity that day (must makeup the lab within one week.)

Laboratory Objectives:

The purpose of the biology lab is strengthen knowledge of concepts learned in the Biology classroom. However, sometimes the exercises willnot seem related to class topics.  The point of these exercises is to develop necessary lab skills . Hopefully, you will enjoy exploring Biology through hands-on activities.

At the end of the year you will have learned:

  • To  develop  good record-keeping skills.
  • To  sharpen your observational skills
  • Learn how to gather and analyze data
  • To learn how to analyze your observations you have made
  • To write correct conclusions about your data
  • To write about your results in a "scientifically correct" manner

RESPONSIBLITIES OF STUDENTS IN THE LABORATORY

1.

Students should be familiar with safety procedures and take appropriate precautions at all times to insure the safety of every student in the lab.

2.

Students should follow instructions carefully,

3.

Anyone injured in the lab, should inform the instructor immediately and take immediate action to reduce the risk of further injury.

4.

Some lab activities may require protective eyewear

5.

Students should report all hazardous conditions to the instructor immediately.

6.

No chemicals, even chemicals known to be safe, should be ingested, inhaled, or touched unless specifically directed to do so by your instructor.

7.

All organisms, living or dead, should be treated with care and respect.

8.

The safe use of specific equipment and tools (e.g., microscopes, slides, scalpels, and pipettes) will be demonstrated by the instructor during the laboratory sessions. Students should be sure they understand this usage.

9.

Students should clean up any supplies used and should return materials where they belong as instructed. Any material spilled should be cleaned appropriately. Report and hazardous spills or breakages.

10.

Broken glass and sharp metal waste should be placed only in those receptacles marked for such disposal -- do not put these materials in normal trash receptacles.

11.

Some chemical wastes may not be dumped into laboratory sinks. In such circumstances an appropriate container will be provided for this waste in the lab.

12.

Organic waste resulting from animal dissection activities should be disposed of in the appropriate receptacle, not the ordinary trash receptacles.

13.

Clean up the laboratory area: remove and dispose of all trash; return supplies and equipment to appropriate locations; and disinfect bench area. ( every Bench will be checked after each exercise)

14.

After completing laboratory activities and clean up, students should wash their hands

15.

Eating, drinking, and playing around is prohibited during the laboratory session. Students exhibiting unsafe or inappropriate behavior in the lab may be given a "0" for that day.
